FAQ

  • What is the purpose of the Supply Chain Carbon Calculator?
HMM understands that the reduction of GHG emissions in the face of climate change is one of the most significant challenges that require continuous efforts. We endeavor to reduce emissions wherever we can – not just on our vessels but throughout the entire transport journey.
We developed Supply Chain Carbon Calculator, not just for our customers but for all individuals and groups who take great interest in sustainability and support green transport solutions.
  • What does the Supply Chain Carbon Calculator offer?
HMM Supply Chain Carbon Calculator calculates total GHG emissions generated from Place of Receipt to Place of Delivery, including door locations. The Calculator provides customers a useful tool to better manage their own cargo emissions as well as to choose mode of transport taking the environmental impact into account.
  • How do I use Supply Chain Carbon Calculator?
To start the calculation of your transport emissions you have to fill in the transport details (origin to destination locations, shipping date, cargo volume, etc.). The boxes marked with an * are mandatory fields in order to calculate your emissions. After you have completed the input for the transport chain, choose whether the Cargo Volume should be TEU or Tons.
  • What is the methodology behind the Supply Chain Carbon Calculator?
HMM Supply Chain Carbon Calculator follows industry accredited methodology for their inland and ocean transportation. For ocean transport, emissions are calculated according to the methodology developed by the Clean Cargo, which provides a set of industry average emission factors for maritime container transport per trade lane that are updated annually. For inland transport, emissions are calculated in line with Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) Framework, a globally recognized methodology for reporting logistics GHG footprint.
  • Do actual routes taken always correspond with the calculated routes?
Ocean distances used in this calculator are based on the proforma schedule, which considers the distance of all the ports from the origin to destination.
Inland distance re-calculated according to the third party sources for representative locations, which take into consideration distances that are close to actual routes. Given that these are based on historical route plan schedules, actual distances may slightly differ.
Kindly note that HMM Supply Chain Carbon Calculator provides estimation only, and HMM does not bear any liability for the completeness of these calculations used.
  • What is Clean Cargo?
Clean Cargo is a collaborative partnership between ocean container carriers, freight forwarders, and cargo owners. Clean Cargo focuses on tracing and reducing GHG emissions from container shipping and sharing ocean container freight decarbonization. With the aggregated data gathered across the industry, Clean Cargo generates containership emissions by proposing standards accepted by all actors of the global value chain. HMM Supply Chain Carbon Calculator has employed Clean Cargo methodology to calculate its ocean-leg emissions.
  • What is the GLEC framework?
Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) framework is the leading methodology for container transport that allows companies across the supply chain to calculate their GHG footprint across the multimodal global supply chain. It is globally recognized methodology for reporting of the logistics GHG footprint. Inland GHG emissions are calculated using emission factors from the GLEC framework.
  • What is TTW and WTW?
HMM Supply Chain Carbon calculator indicates the estimated GHG emitted per operating unit measured in tCO2e. With the HMM Supply chain Carbon Calculator, emissions would be expressed by selecting Emission type between Well-to-Wake(WTW) and Tank-to-Wake(TTW). TTW = Tank to Wake : Emission of GHG(Green House Gas) from combustion of Fuel which has been stored in a tank.
WTT = Well to Tank : Emission of GHG from the extraction, transportation, refinement of Fuel.
WTW = Well to Wake : Emission of GHG taking both WTT and TTW into account.
In other words, WTW indicates the GHG emission of the Fuel in its entire process of production, delivery and use onboard ships, and all emissions produced therein.
